Pallet calculator: how many pallets fit

Independent site, not a government agency or a customs broker. General information, not legal advice or customs advice.

Choose a container and a pallet size: how many fit each way round, per level and stacked.

How many pallets on the floor of a container?

Example value: replace it.

Pallets, simple pattern

18

Per level18
Lengthwise18
Crosswise11

Whole pallets in one orientation, no overhang, from the inside size you enter. The size shown first is an example. A mixed pattern can add a pallet; a carrier’s load plan decides.

This tool works by geometry alone. It divides the inside length and width of the container by the pallet’s length and width, keeps only whole pallets, and tries both orientations, then multiplies by the number of levels you say the load can stand. The inside size is your input, from your carrier: we could not verify one at a source we may reuse on November 2, 2026, and the figures in the fields are round examples. The Euro pallet is the 1,200 by 800 mm in EPAL’s sheet. The 48 by 40 inch size is a common US convention, for which we read no official sheet. A mixed pattern, turning some pallets, can add one or more to the count, and a load plan can lose some for doors or overhang. So treat it as a first count.

The inside size is an example to replace: no federal rule fixes it, so ask the carrier.

Why a simple count is useful, and where it stops

The count gives you a number to check against a quote. If a forwarder’s plan shows fewer, ask why: you may learn about a height or a doorway limit. If it shows more, that may be a mixed pattern, and you can draw it. Weight also matters: compare your load with the payload on the carrier’s sheet, and ask your trucker for the road limit.

Trailers

The second tool does the same for a trailer. No federal rule sets the inside size, so enter what your carrier gives. The example in the field is not a measure of any trailer. See the trailer page for what the federal rule does say about length.

From pallets to cost

The per-pallet share of the freight is the rate divided by the count, which is why one extra pallet can matter. The pallet sizes page and the 40-foot page go further.

Questions importers ask

Does the pallet count change with overhanging cartons?

Yes. The calculation uses the pallet’s size, so if cartons overhang the pallet, the real footprint is bigger, and fewer fit. Allow also for wrap, corner boards and a small gap for loading with a forklift. If your load goes past the deck, enter its real outer size in place of the pallet size when you work out the count by hand, using the same division.

Can I stack pallets in a container?

Only if the goods and pallets will stand it. Height is the first limit, and your carrier’s sheet gives the inside height. The load below is the second: EPAL gives a safe working load for its pallet, and a stacked figure for the bottom one. The tool multiplies by the number of levels you enter, and checks neither weight nor crushing.

Does the tool check the weight of the load?

No. It counts pallets by geometry, and it does not know your load. Multiply the count by your weight per pallet, and compare the total with the payload on your carrier’s sheet and with the road limit from your trucker, whichever is lower. The container check on the CBM calculator page does this from your own totals, once you enter them.
