A search helps you start: the legal classification depends on the General Rules of Interpretation and the notes, and CBP can rule on it in advance. Everything you enter stays in this browser: nothing is sent or stored.

This lookup searches the 11,415 lines with a rate in chapters 1 to 97 of 2026 HTS Revision 22, the edition in effect from October 30, 2026, downloaded from the US International Trade Commission on November 2, 2026. Words must all appear in the description of a line or its parent. Digits match the start of a code. The search is a starting point, because tariff wording is legal wording: a “rain jacket” will not find anything until you search “anoraks” or “garments”, and a word match does not make a line correct. Classification follows the General Rules of Interpretation and the section and chapter notes, and CBP can rule on it in advance. Each result gives the general rate and column 2. Once you have a line, enter it in the calculator further down, which shows what stacks on it by country of origin.

Then price the line you found

Search tips that work

The tariff describes materials and functions, not product names. Search “footwear” rather than “trainers”, “woven” or “knitted” for clothing, and the fiber by its name. Try one or two words first, then add a word when there are too many results. Typing digits such as 6404 lists the lines below that heading. A line shown with eight digits holds the rate. Your entry needs the ten-digit number below it, found on the USITC’s tariff pages.

What the columns mean

General applies to countries with normal trade relations. Column 2 applies to goods from the few countries without them: Belarus, Cuba, North Korea and Russia, according to general note 3(b). The Special column, which the calculator reads, shows what each agreement or program offers. None of those columns includes additional duties, which live in chapter 99.

How this differs from the official search

The USITC’s tariff database is the legal reference, and you should finish there. It does not, however, add up what chapter 99 puts on top of a line for a given origin. That is what the calculator on this page and the main tool do. Their results can lag a change published after the release date, so compare that date with the current release.

Chapters at a glance

Of those lines, 4,315 print a free general rate. Clothing, footwear and glassware hold many of the highest rates. Machinery and electronics are free or low, and the additional duties do most of the work for them. See clothing, shoes and machinery.

Questions importers ask

How do I find the HTS code for my product?

Work from the outside in. Identify the chapter by what the good is, then the four-digit heading by its wording, then the subheadings down to ten digits. Read the notes at the start of the section and the chapter, since they exclude goods that seem to belong. A search helps you find the place. When two headings seem possible, the General Rules of Interpretation decide.

Can I get an official answer on my HTS code?

Yes. US Customs and Border Protection issues binding rulings on classification in response to a written request before import, under 19 CFR Part 177, at no charge. Its Customs Rulings Online Search System holds past rulings you can read for free. A ruling covers the goods it describes. It is the safest route for a product with a costly difference between two lines.

What happens if I use the wrong HTS code?

You remain responsible for the entry even when someone else prepared it, as importers must use reasonable care. CBP can reclassify, ask for the unpaid duties and, in serious cases, charge a penalty. An error can also run the other way, so you may have overpaid. A broker or a ruling can reduce that risk, but this site cannot decide the matter for you.
