Coffee takes heading 0901 of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule, split into not roasted and roasted, and each of those into decaffeinated or not. All four main lines print Free as general rate. Coffee is also on the exemption list of U.S. note 52(b), which takes it out of the 60-economy Section 301 duty, so green coffee from Vietnam, Colombia or Ethiopia owes no duty at all in this calculator. For Brazil, the 25 percent duty of heading 9903.05.01 has exemptions in U.S. note 50, which we did not extract, so the result of $2,500 (25%) on $10,000 is what the tool shows without them: read that note before you rely on it. Chinese coffee shows List 4A: +7.5% under the older China lists. Then come the fees, and for ocean cargo the harbor fee. Instant coffee and extracts are in heading 2101. Which layers remain

Think of coffee as the test case for exemptions. The general rate is zero. The country duty is zero through note 52(b). What remains on an ocean shipment of $50,000 from Colombia is the merchandise processing fee and the harbor maintenance fee, which the fee calculator shows. Coffee substitutes containing coffee sit on 0901.90.20 at 1.5¢/kg, a rate per kilogram.

Questions importers ask

What is the difference between green and roasted coffee codes?

Not roasted coffee takes 0901.11 and 0901.12, and roasted coffee takes 0901.21 and 0901.22, with the second of each pair for decaffeinated. All are free in the general column, so the code rarely changes the duty. Your entry still needs the exact line, and the calculator shows the same layers for each of them, so pick the one matching your goods.

Do I have to register to import coffee?

Food safety rules are separate from the tariff, and we did not read the Food and Drug Administration’s rules for this site, so we cannot say what your shipment needs. Read the agency’s pages, or ask your broker, before you ship. Paying duty does not replace any requirement that the agency sets, and this calculator has no way of telling you whether you meet one.

Are coffee pods treated as coffee?

We read no ruling on filled capsules. Heading 0901 covers coffee, and rule 5(b) of the general rules deals with packing materials presented with goods, so the capsule’s role needs a look. Heading 2101 is for extracts, essences and concentrates of coffee, so soluble drinks need a separate look too. Search the rulings database for your format, because the two headings have their own rates.
