Laptops take line 8471.30.01 of the US tariff, for portable automatic data processing machines weighing no more than 10 kilograms with at least a processor, a keyboard and a display. The general rate is Free. U.S. note 52(b) also lists the line as exempt from the 60-economy Section 301 duty, and the note 20 China lists show None for it in our extract. That is why the same $10,000 of laptops comes to $0 (0%) here, whichever origin you choose, before fees. Neighboring lines differ. Desktop machines comprising a processor and input-output units on 8471.41.01 show List 4A: +7.5%, and other units show other lists. A Section 232 list can also name the line, as the tool shows, and origin decides which layers reach a machine assembled from imported parts. Read in 2026 HTS Revision 22 on November 2, 2026.

Exempt means from one layer

Note 52(b) removes only the country duty. It does not remove a China Section 301 list where one applies, nor a Section 232 duty. So a server unit on 8471.80.90 can differ from a laptop: it shows List 3: +25% for China. Compare the two in the tool, and do not use the laptop’s line for a whole bill of mixed goods.

Assembled in one country from parts of another

Origin is what brings these layers, and for assembled electronics it can be a real question. The usual test is whether the work creates a new article, as our origin page explains.

Questions importers ask

Where do tablets go in the tariff?

We read no ruling on tablets, so we do not say which line applies. Line 8471.30.01 covers portable machines of no more than 10 kilograms with at least a central processing unit, a keyboard and a display. A device without a keyboard, or one with cellular functions, raises a question against that wording and against heading 8517. Search the rulings database for a device like yours.

Are computer parts exempt like laptops?

Not as a group. Parts have their own lines, such as heading 8473, and the exemption list works code by code. Monitors, memory and power supplies each go to different lines, and some carry List 1 or List 3 for Chinese goods. Enter the exact part in the calculator, or use the lookup to read each line, before you assume the laptop’s result applies.

Does a Section 232 action cover laptops?

In the release we read, line 8471.30.01 appears on one of the Section 232 lists we extracted, and the tool offers it as a choice, leaving it off. The scope wording in the note decides whether a consumer computer falls in, so read it first. Check the date on this page against the Federal Register, as actions can change.
