Rechargeable batteries take heading 8507 of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule: lead-acid on 8507.10 and 8507.20, nickel-metal hydride on 8507.50, lithium-ion on 8507.60.00, and others on 8507.80. Non-rechargeable cells go to heading 8506 instead. The ordinary rate on lithium-ion is 3.4%. Chinese goods also owe the strategic-goods duty of U.S. note 31, which applies +25% on 8507.60.00 under heading 9903.91.06 and comes on top of ordinary duty. With the 60-economy duty, $10,000 of lithium-ion batteries from China works out at $4,090 (40.9%) here, against $1,250 (12.5%) from South Korea and $1,590 (15.9%) from Vietnam. The line also appears on the Section 232 auto parts list for batteries in vehicles, so select that program when it applies. Rates from 2026 HTS Revision 22, read on November 2, 2026.

Reading the heading

Lines of 8507 are written by chemistry first. A nickel-metal hydride battery on 8507.50 shows 3.4% and List 3: +25% for China, and other accumulators on 8507.80.82 show 3.4% and List 2: +25%. So chemistry changes the additional duty as much as the ordinary rate. Ask the supplier for the data sheet and keep it in the entry file.

Questions importers ask

Are power banks classified as batteries?

We read no customs ruling on power banks, so we do not say which line applies. Heading 8507 is for electric storage batteries, and 8504 for static converters, and they can carry different China lists. So the choice changes the duty. Search the rulings database for a product like yours, or ask for a ruling under 19 CFR part 177, before you commit to a large order.

What is the tariff on lithium-ion batteries from China?

For line 8507.60.00, the calculator shows the ordinary 3.4%, note 31’s +25% and the 60-economy 12.5%, totaling $4,090 (40.9%) on $10,000 before fees. It leaves out any antidumping or countervailing order, and any change after the date on this page. For cells meant for vehicles, also check the Section 232 auto parts action in note 33.

Do lithium batteries have special shipping rules?

Those are transport rules rather than customs duties, and we did not read them for this site, so we give no guidance on dangerous goods. Ask your carrier or forwarder which rules apply to your batteries and to your mode of transport, before you book. They can change separately from any tariff, and a duty calculation says nothing about whether a shipment is allowed on board.
