Ceramic tableware and kitchenware other than porcelain takes heading 6912 of the US tariff, and porcelain and bone china take heading 6911. These lines are written in a way that surprises people, with separate rates for items in or out of sets, and for sets by aggregate value. Coarse-grained earthenware on 6912.00.10 prints 0.7%, hotel or restaurant ware on 6912.00.20 prints 28%, mugs on 6912.00.44 print 10%, and other articles on 6912.00.50 print 6%. The China column is uneven: mugs and other articles show None in our extract, while coarse earthenware shows List 4A: +7.5%. On $10,000 of those other articles, the calculator gives $1,850 (18.5%) from China and $1,000 (10%) from the European Union. Read in 2026 HTS Revision 22 on November 2, 2026.

Look at the item before the material

Mugs and steins have lines of their own, as do cups valued over a limit and serviette rings. Sets are written separately. Line 6912.00.35, for a pattern with a set value in a certain band, prints 9.8%. Pick the most specific description and test the value on your invoice. Tiles and sanitary ware take other headings, in the same chapter.

Questions importers ask

Is a coffee mug on the Section 301 China list?

The mug line 6912.00.44 shows None in the release we read, so it does not carry an older China list duty in this tool. The country duty of 12.5% still applies to Chinese goods on top of the ordinary 10%. Your result can change if you use the wrong line, so check that the piece really counts as a mug or stein.

How do I tell porcelain from ceramic for customs?

Porcelain and china take heading 6911, and other ceramics take 6912. The notes to chapter 69 define porcelain as ceramic ware, other than stoneware, with a fired white body unless artificially colored, which absorbs no more than 0.5 percent of its weight of water and is translucent at several millimeters. A marketing name is not enough, so ask for the specification, or a lab test.

How are dinnerware sets valued for duty?

Some lines tie the rate to the aggregate value of the items in a pattern, with bands that define a standard set of pieces. To use them, you calculate that value from your invoice. Sets that are worth more can fall under a different rate. Read the description closely, as a small price change for one pattern can move the whole shipment.
