Aluminum has its own chapter in the US tariff, chapter 76, which runs from unwrought metal to articles. Plates and sheets take heading 7606, where alloy sheet that is not clad, on 7606.12.30, shows 3%, and other articles fall on 7616.99.51 at 2.5%. Those rates matter little once Section 232 applies. U.S. note 16 sets the duty on group A aluminum at +50% of the full customs value, and a proclamation of July 2026 further changed the aluminum action. Goods covered by it leave the 60-economy duty, while Chinese goods on a Section 301 list or in note 31 keep that layer too. The result here for $10,000 of alloy sheet: $5,300 (53%) from Canada before any USMCA claim, and $7,800 (78%) from China. Rates from 2026 HTS Revision 22, read on November 2, 2026. Russian aluminum has its own headings, which we did not verify and do not model.

Sheet, article or derivative

Chapter 76 goods owe the metals duty without any weight test. An aluminum part classified outside the chapter, such as a piece of furniture or a machine part, comes into it only if its code is on a list and aluminum makes up at least 15 percent of its weight. See the group rates on the Section 232 page. A line such as rivets on 7616.10.10, with 5.7% ordinary duty, shows List 3: +25% for China and no metals group in our extract: try it to see the difference.

Questions importers ask

What HS code covers aluminum extrusions?

Bars, rods and profiles of aluminum take heading 7604, tubes take 7608. An extrusion further worked into a part can leave the chapter, for example as a window frame in 7610 or a part of a machine. An antidumping order covers aluminum extrusions from China, with review results published in August 2026. Read its scope as well, because it is not in this calculator.

Do aluminum cans and foil pay the metals duty?

The note’s lists include many derivative articles outside plain metal stock, and foil sits in heading 7607 within chapter 76, where the weight test does not apply. Check the code in the calculator, which shows whether a program lists it. In all, the note’s lists counted 719 codes in the release we read, including steel, aluminum and copper goods.

Does a USMCA claim remove the aluminum tariff?

No. The note says a free trade agreement does not remove the Section 232 metals duty, so a Canadian or Mexican origin claim changes the ordinary rate and removes the merchandise processing fee for originating goods, but the metals line stays. The calculator keeps it unless you change the program, which you should only do if you have read that it does not apply.
