Glassware for table, kitchen, office or decoration takes heading 7013 of the US tariff, one of the places where ordinary duty is still very high. The lines split by what the piece is, by the material of the glass, and often by value per piece. Glass-ceramic ware on 7013.10.50 prints 26%, lead crystal stemware valued at no more than $1 each on 7013.22.10 prints 15%, and low-value other glassware on 7013.99.40 prints 38%. The next band up on 7013.99.50 prints 30%. Value per piece is therefore worth checking before you agree a price. Many lines also show List 4A: +7.5% for China, though some value bands have none. On $10,000 of that glass-ceramic ware, the result comes to $4,600 (46%) from China, and $2,600 (26%) from the European Union, where ordinary duty already exceeds the note’s total. Value bands, read carefully

On these lines, the percentage often falls as the value per piece rises. So a cheap glass bears a higher rate than an expensive one, on a smaller base. Take the invoice value per piece, without international freight, and compare it with the wording. A piece valued over $5 on 7013.99.70 prints 7.2%. A correct unit value can change the rate by a lot here.

Questions importers ask

Why does glassware have such high duty rates?

The rates are set in the schedule, and we do not comment on why. In practice, on the other glassware lines, an article valued not over $0.30 each prints 38 percent, and one valued over $5 each on 7013.99.70 prints 7.2 percent. So value decides a lot here. Enter your line in the calculator, and try the next band if your price is close to a limit.

Does a glass with a printed logo change its code?

The value bands we read do not name logos. Line 7013.99.10 does name glassware decorated with metal flecking, glass pictorial scenes or similar effects, so read your decoration against it. Printing can raise the value per piece, and if that crosses a band, the rate changes, often downward on these lines. Check the customs value per piece after printing, then ask a broker in a close case.

Are glass food containers in heading 7013?

Not always. Jars, bottles and similar containers for transport or packing goods take heading 7010, with other rates. Heading 7013 is for table, kitchen and similar ware. A storage jar sold for kitchen use may be on either side, depending on design and how it is put up for sale. Search rulings for similar goods before you settle on a code.
