Most electronics are in chapter 85 of the US tariff, with computers in chapter 84. The general duty on most of them is Free, and many lines are exempted from the 60-economy Section 301 duty by U.S. note 52(b), so the picture changes line by line. Chapter 85 has 624 lines in 2026 HTS Revision 22, 362 of them free, and 30 marked exempt in the list we extracted. The China lists still bite: 552 of its lines carry a Section 301 duty for Chinese goods. Two products that look alike can differ, as a monitor and a television sit on different lines. Headphones on 8518.30.20 from China come to $1,250 (12.5%) of a $10,000 value in this calculator. Start from the exact product, then use the table on this page to compare origins.

Check three things on an electronics line

First, the code: search it in the lookup. Second, whether its line is exempt from the country duty: the tool says so in the result. Third, for China, which list applies. Network equipment on 8517.62.00 is exempt from the country duty and still on List 4A, while a solar cell line such as 8541.43 sits under a different logic, with +50% shown for Chinese goods.

Batteries inside the box

Lithium-ion batteries have their own line, covered on the batteries page. We did not read a rule on batteries shipped inside devices, so ask your broker. Transport rules are a separate subject from duty, and we did not read them either, so ask your carrier.

Questions importers ask

Are electronics exempt from new US tariffs?

Only some. U.S. note 52(b) exempts a list of codes from the 60-economy duty, including many telecom and computing lines, and the calculator reads that list. In the release we read, 863 codes were on it across all chapters. The exemption does not remove China Section 301 duties, and it does not cover every electronic product, so always check the exact 8- or 10-digit number.

Do semiconductors pay a Section 232 tariff?

A Section 232 action covers certain semiconductor articles under heading 9903.79.01, described in U.S. note 39, at +25% with exceptions. In the tariff files only a few codes are named. Whether a chip or an assembly falls within it depends on the note’s description, so the calculator offers the program but leaves it unselected. Read the note before you decide.

Why does a product with several functions cause trouble?

Note 3 to section XVI says that composite machines, and machines designed for two or more complementary or alternative functions, are classified by the component or machine that performs the principal function, unless the context requires otherwise. The answer can move a device between lines with different rates and different China lists. Describe what it mainly does, keep the specification sheet, and ask for a ruling when the difference matters.
